Mammals: nearly all big animals to be expected, also 1 Leopard with Impala in acacia tree and one evening about 15 to 20 Lions right next to our tent during 1 scary night (the crew will remember this too, they spent all night scaring the animals away). No Cheetah however. Wildebeest migration unfortunately not in 'our' area what should have been the case. This means far less mammals of course but also less attendants such as predators and especially vultures etc. A good reason to return in the future !
The drive from Ndutu to the Park Entrance (Naabi Hill Gate with giant "kopje", worth visiting itself) on the way to Seronera through the short grasslands was way too fast for birding or enjoying the abundant wildlife here because of lack of time. We never saw as many animals anywhere else in the Serengeti. Try to arrange your timing to have more time here to look for steppe birds as well.
Campsite: 2 nights at small campsite at Seronera

NGORONGORO (0,6 days)
We had luck with cristal clear skies. The amazing view from the crater rim, looking down at the crater dotted with thousands of mammals is something we will never forget! We had no time though for proper investigation of the surrounding mountain grassland with the displaying whidowbirds and especially no time for the montane forest. But the crater really lived up to its legendary status. Pretty much palearctic winter visitors too, which is a nice experience.
Abdim's Stork 500, European White Stork 50, Lesser (and a few Greater) Flamingo 10000's!, Pallid Harrier 2m, Crowned Eagle 1 heard, Eurasian Hobby 1, Crested Guineafowl 10, Common Quail (heard), Red-knobbed Coot 3, Grey Crowned Crane 12, Kori Bustard 10, Black-bellied Bustard 4, Pied Avocet 20, lots of waders, Grey-headed Gull 5, Lesser Black-backed Gull 1, Gull-billed Tern 30, African Green Pigeon 10, Schalow's Turaco 3, Scarce Swift 5, Mottled Swift 3, Cinnamon-chested Bee-eater 3, European Bee-eater 5, Flappet Lark 1, Red-capped Lark 1, Banded Martin 3, Mosque Swallow 2, Wire-tailed Swallow 2, Rosy-breasted Longclaw 4, Ashy Flycatcher 2, Chinspot Batis 1f, Malachite Sunbird 4, Golden-winged Sunbird 1, White-necked Raven, Kenya Rufous Sparrow 2, Black-winged Bishop 1m, Red-collared Widowbird 4 displaying (entrance to camping), Jackson's Widowbird 8 displaying (highland grassland with sedge tussocks), Red-billed Firefinch 1m
Mammals: all the animals you can expect, including 2 Black Rhino's (1 distant view from the crater rim, 1 sleeping in the crater itself), no Cheetah however. Very impressive area!

LAKE NYUMBA YA MUNGU (0,5 days = far too short)
Artificial lake south of Moshi (sometimes called Lake Pangani) which is teeming with water- and shorebirds alongs its shores. We only visited the very southern end near the dam itself and overlooked (only) about 2 km of shores, but there must be numerous good watchpoints all around the lake. A search on Google Earth could reveal areas with reedbeds instead of sandy shores as well. There should be a heron colony at it's northern end. Surrounding the lake there is dry forest rich in typical birds not seen elsewhere. Fishermen are abundant on the lake. Hopefully their fishing is sustainable, but if it is, fish reproduction here must be amazingly large. Do explore this place and take your time to explore both the lake shores and the scrub around it! Because of shortage of information about this lake, we give all our observations here.

LAKE JIPE (1 day)
Improvised campsite on a low hill with scrub overlooking lake Jipe and Tsavo West NP in the distance. Superb view and very friendly local people. The lake itself has rather few birds, but this may depend on timing. A visit in the very early morning or evening should be a lot better than our trip in the hot hours of mid-day. The water was green and not transparent because of algae blooming, so no water lillies or other water plants. The lake is rapidly silting up because of erosion and irrigation elsewhere, with a huge Typha vegetation along its shores making access to the lake difficult. The fishing economy recently collapsed, forcing people to move to Nyumba ya Mungu. The area is still worth visiting if you have spare time, especially for the relaxed "off the beaten track" feeling and the nice surroundings. And yes, we did see yet another range of new good species as well. And no other jeeps here!
Because of shortage of information about this lake, we give all our observations here.

HOTEL PROTEA GARDEN AND SURROUNDINGS, MACHANGE, KILIMANJARO (evening + 0,5 day)
Lush garden with nice swimming pool. Mountain stream nearby with natural vegetation. Elsewhere densely populated productive agricultural land with fields and orchards and rather few birds. Morning walk to waterfall with lots of big fruit bats is a nice difference from car-birding although not so spectacular as the price for this guided 5 km walk (15 US$).
Common birdlife comparable to Moivaro but less diverse and less special species, probably because surroundings have few good forest. Best birds though:
African Goshawk 1ad sitting at bat cave entrance, African Olive Pigeon 1, Cinnamon-chested Bee-eater 6 (in forest canopy), Crowned Hornbill 2, Silvery-cheeked Hornbill 3, White-eared and Brown-breasted Barbet, Mountain Wagtail 1, Rüppell's Robin-Chat 1, White-eyed Slaty-Flycatcher 3, African Paradise-Flycatcher 5+, Black-throated Wattle-eye 1m, Eastern Olive Sunbird 1, Amethyst Sunbird, Collared Sunbird, Variable Sunbird, Black-backed Puffback 1, Eurasian Golden Oriole, Red-headed Weaver 1m, Baglafecht Weaver 4, Spectacled Weaver 3, Red-billed Firefinch 1, Rufous-backed Mannikin c, Southern Citril 2
Mammals: Sykes's Monkey 6, Tanganyika Mountain Squirrel 1, bushbaby sp. heard at night (difficult to spot, the stay high in trees and jump off quikly when disturbed)

Olivier and Veerle stayed a little longer, spending 3 days at Peponi Campsite and 2 days on Zanzibar before sadly returning home.

Peponi area, 30 km south of Tanga
This is a quiet coastal area with beaches, clear ocean with sandy islets and coral reefs, mangroves, palm groves and sisal plantations. A bicycle would be perfect for excursions inland here to find some natural vegetation patches (scarce here). At low tide the beach has a lot of wintering waders.
